FAQs about your little round houseLooking after your roundhouse. The cob walls should last decades, even hundreds of years providing they do not suffer excessive damp from say a faulty roof or drying out only possible if overheated with a large log burner or heaters. The limewash is normally used to shed off excess rain, but given the deep eaves created by the overhanging thatch this is not normally an issue. The limewash keeps the building looking good and of course gives you the opportunity to alter the style by changing colour schemes. Can plants be grown up the outside? It is advised that climbers are not grown directly against the walls. This can cause two problems the plant may try and attach itself to the cob and pull parts away and it may also start drawing moisture out or trap it in. Trellising or arbours can of course be used to grow plants up screens nearby if desired, or low level plants grown in beds next to the roundhouse. What’s standard

About the Thatch The thatching will be done by a local master thatcher with years of experience who normally rethatches whole houses. You can discuss with him different decorative styles to vary the appearance from anything between rustic and formal. |
